Janesce has always advocated and practised ‘no animal testing’. In our view it is a practise that shames the skin care industry. Why should animals be victims of our quest for beauty?
This has been a stance that we have not waivered from, and we are really excited that the EU (European Union) has declared that products that are tested on animals are banned from importation. Previously, it only covered a ban on testing within the 27-country bloc. According to information available, there has been a ban on animal tested products in the EU since 2009, however it did leave loopholes. The law previously did not preclude ingredients that are tested on animals, now it does. It also did not preclude products that were tested on animals outside the EU, now it does. The ban applies to any animal testing of ingredients or finished product regardless of which country the tests are carried out.
This is having a huge impact on the personal care industry worldwide. Some companies are taking steps to ban all animal testing, while others are looking to existing and new markets where animal testing is allowed. The overall impact is that it has created a market division between those companies and countries that test on animals and those that do not. The ethical question that it raises is making very large manufacturers accountable, and from surveys conducted in major markets, this is supported by the majority of consumers. And as a consequence of the media coverage on animal testing, consumers are voting with their wallets.
So how will testing be done? Science has advanced enough so that synthetic human skin offers a plausible alternative.
What now for the industry? Every one is asking the same question. With the EU firm in their resolve to eradicate animal testing from the industry, the influence will permeate through other developed countries where the majority of consumers are demanding change. We would like to think that Australia will in time, embrace the EU stance.
