Having a daily skin regime that is effective is a must for glowing, healthy skin but when time is of the essence we often find ourselves looking for short cuts and quick fixes. When it comes to our skin care routine we need to make sure any compromises we make are worth it!
We often get asked about cleansing in the shower as a way to save time in the evening and whether it is ok to do? Short answer – yes as it then gives you more time to focus on soaking and moisturising – but it’s not as simple as you think. Check out the explanation below on how to do it properly so you aren’t causing damage to your skin.
Firstly, make sure the water is not too hot. Extremes of temperature are damaging for the fine capillaries found just under your skin. These capillaries aren’t very strong and the walls are only one cell thick. When temperatures are cold they contract and when they are hot, they expand. Constantly exposing them to extremes of temperature cause them to lose their elasticity and become constantly dilated resulting in fine red lines under the skin, often referred to as broken capillaries. Using hot water to cleanse will cause this type of damage so turn down the temperature to slightly warmer than lukewarm. If you like a scalding hot shower then cleansing in the shower might not be for you.
Secondly, dampen your skin with the water and then turn your face away to apply your cleanser, out of the flow of water. This prevents your cleanser becoming too diluted to do its job. Keeping your face out of the flow of water, use a flannel or soaking cloth to remove your cleanser as this has the additional benefit of giving your skin a gentle exfoliation. Then when you hop out of the shower, make sure you dry your face first with your towel. Leaving water on your skin to evaporate is a sure way to cause dehydration which is that last thing we want.
Lastly, complete your skin care routine at the basin. Soaking in the shower has not been shown to be effective at all. It is crucial that your fill your basin with warm water, add your Janesce soaking drops and use your soaking cloth to begin the hydration process. With the time you have saved cleansing in the shower, you can make sure you spend a good amount of time infusing the moisture your skin desperately needs with this important step. Follow soaking with your floral mist, botanical concentrate and Janesce moisturiser or facial oil.
Enjoy!
